Kenya or Tanzania for a First Safari? An Honest Comparison

The short answer

Kenya is easier, closer together and better value, and it holds the Mara River crossings. Tanzania offers greater scale, Ngorongoro Crater and calving season. For a first safari with limited days, Kenya usually wins.

We operate in both countries, so we have no reason to flatter either. Here is how the choice actually breaks down once you put dates and days against it.

Distances and days

Kenya's headline parks sit close to Nairobi and to each other, which means fewer internal flights and less time lost to transfers. Tanzania's northern circuit is magnificent and larger, and that scale costs you either driving hours or flight legs.

If you have five days, Kenya gives you more wildlife time. If you have nine or more, Tanzania's space starts to pay off.

The case for doing both

Mara and Serengeti are the same ecosystem divided by a border, and crossing between them is the most natural cross border safari in Africa. A ten to twelve day journey can run Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and finish on the Zanzibar coast without a single wasted day if the flights are sequenced correctly.

The one thing to get right is the border and flight logic, which is where most self planned versions of this trip fall apart. We hold the schedules and build the itinerary backwards from your international flights.

Visas

Ask us about the East Africa Tourist Visa if your route includes Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. We tell you which visa combination is cheapest for your exact routing.

Frequently asked

Is the Serengeti better than the Masai Mara?
It is larger and feels wilder. The Mara has higher predator density in a smaller area and the river crossings. Neither is objectively better.
Can I visit both countries in one trip?
Yes. Ten days is comfortable for Mara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro, and twelve if you want to add Zanzibar.
