Safari and Zanzibar: How to Combine Wildlife and the Ocean Without Wasting Days

The short answer

Do the safari first and the beach second, allow at least four nights on Zanzibar, and sequence the internal flights before you book anything else. Twelve days covers Mara, Serengeti and the island comfortably.

Bush then beach is the most requested combination in East Africa and the easiest to get wrong. The order, the flights and the number of island nights all matter.

Section 01

Safari first, always

Game drives start before dawn and involve dust, layers and long days. Beach days do not. Guests who reverse the order arrive at the Mara already unwound and leave the trip on an early alarm, which is the wrong shape for a holiday.

A twelve day journey that works

This is the shape we build most often. It assumes an international arrival in Nairobi and a departure from Zanzibar, which avoids doubling back.

  • Days 1 to 2: Nairobi arrival, transfer and a Nairobi National Park morning
  • Days 3 to 5: Masai Mara, three nights, private vehicle
  • Days 6 to 8: Serengeti, crossing the border, three nights
  • Day 9: Ngorongoro Crater rim, one night, crater descent at dawn
  • Days 10 to 12: Fly to Zanzibar, three to four nights on the north or east coast
Watch the baggage limits

Light aircraft between airstrips carry a soft bag limit that surprises most first time guests. We tell you the exact allowance for your flights and store the rest in Nairobi.

Combine the wildlife with the ocean

We build the bush half first, then attach the island so flights, transfers and check in times actually line up.

How many beach nights

Three nights is the minimum that feels like a holiday rather than a layover. Four to five is where guests genuinely relax, and where a Stone Town morning, a spice farm afternoon and a sandbank dhow day all fit without pressure.

For honeymooners we usually push the island half longer and the safari half shorter, and choose a villa or a small beachfront property over a large resort.

When to travel

June to October pairs peak game viewing with reliable island weather, which is why it is the busiest window. January and February are hot, clear and quieter. Avoid the long rains in April and much of May if the beach half matters to you.

Frequently asked

Can I fly from the Masai Mara to Zanzibar?
Not directly. The practical routings connect through Nairobi or through Arusha and Kilimanjaro, which is why the order of the trip matters.
Is Diani a good alternative to Zanzibar?
Yes, and it is simpler. Diani is a short flight from Nairobi with no border crossing, which suits shorter trips and family groups.
