Nungwi and Kendwa in the north swim well at all tides. The east coast is quieter with dramatic tides. Four to five nights is the right length, and June to October or January to February the best weather.
Zanzibar is not one beach. Choosing the wrong coast is the difference between swimming whenever you like and waiting for the water to come back.
The tide question nobody mentions
On much of the east coast the ocean retreats a long way at low tide, exposing beautiful flats you can walk on but not swim in. It is a wonderful place to stay if you know that in advance and a disappointment if you do not.
The north around Nungwi and Kendwa holds deeper water through the tide cycle, which is why we recommend it for guests whose main plan is swimming.

Stone Town is worth a night
The old town rewards a slow guided walk: carved doors, the spice market, the history of the coast told properly rather than as a tourist anecdote. One night on the way in or out is enough, and it makes the beach half feel earned.
Season and pairing
June to October is dry, breezy and busy. January and February are hot, clear and quieter. April and much of May bring the long rains. Attach the island to a Serengeti or Masai Mara safari and travel in the June to October window for the strongest combination.
