What the country actually offers
Lake Tanganyika is the headline: the second deepest lake on earth, with clear water, hippos, sandy shore near Bujumbura and sunsets over the Congolese mountains. Inland, Kibira National Park is montane rainforest continuous with Rwanda's Nyungwe, holding chimpanzees and a long list of forest birds.
Rusizi National Park, half an hour from the capital, gives you hippo, birdlife and river delta landscapes as an easy half day.

When to go
The long dry season from June to August and the short dry window in January and February give the best road conditions and forest walking. Rainy months are green and beautiful and harder underfoot.

How it fits a wider journey
Most guests reach Burundi as part of a Great Lakes route: Kigali for gorillas, Nyungwe for chimpanzees, then south to Lake Tanganyika to finish flat and slow. Guests based in Nairobi can also treat it as a genuinely unusual long weekend.
