Amboseli is the finest place in Africa to watch elephants, with individually known families and some of the last great tuskers. Tsavo and Samburu hold large populations with very different landscapes.
Amboseli's elephants have been studied continuously for decades, which means your guide can often name the matriarch in front of you. Very few places on earth offer that.
Why Amboseli is different
The swamps fed by Kilimanjaro's meltwater hold elephants through the dry season, and the open short grass plains mean you watch them in the clear rather than glimpsing them in bush. Long term research has recorded individual families across generations.
The great tuskers, bulls carrying enormous ivory, survive here in numbers found almost nowhere else. Seeing one walk past the vehicle in silence is the sighting guests describe most often when they get home.
What to watch for on a drive
Herd structure tells you the story: the matriarch leading, calves shadowed by older sisters, bulls loosely attached at the edges. Watch for rumbling you can feel more than hear, dust bathing after a swamp feed, and the way a family reforms without apparent instruction after crossing a track.

Best time and best light
June to October and January to March give you dry ground, concentrated herds and the clearest Kilimanjaro views, which appear at dawn and often vanish by nine. If the mountain in the frame matters to you, be out before sunrise.
