The Big Five in Kenya: Where to See Each One, and What to Expect

The short answer

The Masai Mara delivers lion, leopard and buffalo reliably. Add Lake Nakuru or Ol Pejeta for rhino and Amboseli for great tuskers, and a five day route covers all five with a strong chance of success.

The Big Five is a hunting term that became a wish list. It still makes a useful planning framework, as long as you understand which of the five is genuinely hard.

01
Section 01

Why the list exists

The five were named by hunters for being the most dangerous to pursue on foot, not for being the most beautiful or the rarest. That history is worth knowing, because it explains why an animal as common as buffalo sits alongside the black rhino.

Section 03

A five day route that covers all five

Lake Nakuru for rhino and buffalo, then the Masai Mara for lion, leopard and elephant. Or Amboseli for elephant, Nairobi National Park for rhino on your arrival or departure day, and the Mara for the cats.

  • Day 1: Nairobi National Park, black and white rhino
  • Days 2 to 3: Lake Nakuru and Naivasha
  • Days 4 to 5: Masai Mara, lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo

Section 04

The animals worth caring about beyond the five

Cheetah, wild dog, Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk and the enormous cast of birdlife. Ask any guide their best sighting of the year and the answer is almost never one of the five.

Don't let the list run your safari

Guests who tick four and then chase the fifth for two days usually miss the trip in front of them. Tell your guide what matters most and let the rest happen.

Frequently asked

Can I see the Big Five in the Masai Mara alone?
Four of them reliably. Rhino do occur in the Mara but sightings are uncommon, which is why we add Nakuru, Ol Pejeta or Nairobi National Park.
How many days do I need to see the Big Five?
Five days across two well chosen parks gives you a strong chance. Three days in one park does not.
