What a Kenya Safari Really Costs, and Where the Money Goes

The short answer

The four things that move a Kenya safari price are park and conservancy fees, accommodation category, whether the vehicle is private, and whether you fly or drive to the Mara. Everything else is detail.

Two quotations for the same route can differ by thousands of dollars and both be honest. Here is how to read them, line by line, before you commit.

What matters most
  • Park and conservancy fees are fixed by the authorities. Nobody discounts them.
  • A private vehicle is usually the highest value upgrade on the list.
  • Flying to the Mara buys back a full day each way on a short trip.
  • A quote without park fees, transfers and meals listed is not a quote.

The four things that decide your price

First, entry fees. Kenya's parks and the private conservancies charge per person per night or per 24 hours, and those fees are set by the authorities. Second, accommodation. The gap between a comfortable tented camp and a boutique conservancy camp is the largest single variable in most itineraries.

Third, the vehicle. A private 4x4 with a pop up roof for your party alone costs more than a seat in a shared vehicle, and changes the trip completely because you decide when to leave, where to wait and how long to stay. Fourth, transport to the Mara: a road transfer of five to six hours, or a 45 minute flight.

How to compare two quotations

Line the two up and check for the same inclusions rather than the same total. The items most commonly left out of a cheaper quote are park fees, conservancy levies, airport transfers, drinks, and the guide's park entry.

Line itemWhy it matters
Park and conservancy feesPer person per night, fixed by authorities, often omitted to lower a headline price
Accommodation and meal basisFull board versus half board can change the daily cost noticeably
Vehicle and guidePrivate or shared, and whether the guide is KPSGA certified
TransfersAirport meet and greet, hotel and airstrip transfers
FlightsNairobi to Mara airstrip legs, and baggage limits on light aircraft
Drinking water and drinksSmall line, common source of on trip friction
Optional extrasBalloon safari, cultural visits, night drives in conservancies

Where we tell guests to spend, and where to save

Spend on the vehicle and the guide. It is the difference between watching wildlife and understanding it, and it is the thing guests remember years later. Spend on nights rather than parks: two nights in one place beats one night each in two.

Save on season. The same camp in March costs meaningfully less than in August, and March game viewing in Kenya is genuinely good. Save on flying if you enjoy the drive and have the days for it.

Deposits and payment

Our standard terms are a deposit to confirm camps and vehicles, with the balance settled before your safari begins. Every quotation states the exact figures in writing before you pay anything.

Who each budget level suits

Comfortable tented camps with a private vehicle suit most first time visitors, and deliver the great majority of what people picture when they imagine a Kenya safari. Conservancy camps with off road access and night drives suit photographers, honeymooners and returning guests who now want space more than novelty.

Group departures and shared vehicles are the honest choice for travellers whose priority is being there at all. We would rather send you on a well run shared safari than talk you into a private one you resent paying for.

Frequently asked

Are park fees included in your safari prices?
Yes. Every quotation we issue lists park and conservancy fees as a separate line so you can see exactly what the fixed costs are.
Is a private safari worth the extra cost?
For most guests, yes. Controlling your own timing at sightings changes the quality of the trip more than a room upgrade does.
When is a Kenya safari cheapest?
April, May and November are the lowest season months. January to March and June are strong value shoulder months with good game viewing.
