What makes the Mara different
The Masai Mara National Reserve is the northern extension of Tanzania's Serengeti, and it holds the single highest density of predators in East Africa. Lion, leopard, and cheetah are genuinely reliable sightings here in a way they simply aren't in most other parks, most guests see all three within two full days.
Reserve vs. conservancy, the choice that matters most
The main Reserve is where the famous river crossings happen and where most first-time visitors stay. It's spectacular, but it can also mean a dozen vehicles at one sighting during peak migration weeks.
The private conservancies bordering the Reserve (Mara North, Naboisho, Olare Motorogi) cap vehicle numbers and allow off-road driving and night drives, which the main Reserve doesn't. If a quiet, exclusive-feeling safari matters more to you than saving on cost, a conservancy stay is worth the premium.

When to see the river crossings
The wildebeest migration typically reaches the Mara River between late July and early September, though nature doesn't read calendars, we've seen crossings as early as mid-July and as late as October in unusual years. If witnessing a crossing is your single priority, build in at least four full days on the ground to improve your odds; no guide can promise a crossing on any specific day.
Practical planning notes
Fly-in access from Nairobi takes about 45 minutes to one of several small airstrips; the road transfer takes five to six hours each way. For a short trip, flying is worth the extra cost. Pack warm layers, dawn game drives in an open-roof vehicle are genuinely cold even on the equator.
